My mom once told me, "Your dad loves you, he just has a hard time understanding you."

Ah.

I suppose it'll be my turn when we end up raising a skirt-chasing quarterback, regardless of how many times we replace the Jugs magazines we find under his bed with Martha Stewart's Living.

When I realized this, I wondered if I was gay because my father didn't understand me. My friend Roger reminded me that just because a hammer can pound a nail, that doesn't mean a hammer can wash windows. Or something like that.

It's just that when losing a parent, at some point you might want to deal with some unresolved issues, if you feel they are blocking your progress. Apparently my father's opinions of me were blocking my progress ... at least as far as being a writer. "But how will you pay for it?" So, I've been a writer in my spare time, and I've never charged a cent for anything I've written, and I've never collaborated with an editor or other author. It's just been a "hobby".

Maybe that's why writers often write late in their career, we're waiting for our parents to die and leave us alone long enough to string a few sentences together.

Art is Pain, not Bemused Parental Opinions. While the might be very close, they're not equivalent.
